The Past
The land that would become Hendricks County was little more than a hunting ground for the Indian tribes that inhabited the area prior to an 1818 treaty. By 1820, settlers had begun establishing communities and, four years later, Hendricks officially became a county. It was named for William Hendricks, then governor of Indiana.

The commitment to its rich history remains strong among residents of Hendricks County. The Hendricks County Historical Society covers all 10 townships of the county. The Society operates the Hendricks County Museum, whose collection includes items relating to domestic life, agriculture, the military, education and other aspects of the county’s heritage.

The Future
From this rich heritage has grown a community dedicated to preserving the ideals and values of the past while working to develop and grow for the future. The growth of Hendricks County in recent years has been phenomenal and today it is the second fastest growing county in the state.
